Bangladesh Market

Cavanaugh Creations is offering all of the products on our website toward the funding of a mission trip to Bangladesh and India in December and January 2012. All of the proceeds of this fundraiser will go toward funding the trip. We appreciate your support. We will be working with children and helping students to set up a business.

The most recent product is a handmade, crocheted prayer shawl which can be made in any color. Made in less than a week, it contains an intricate pineapple pattern. It retails for $65.00. Anyone interested in purchasing the product can visit Cavanaugh Creations on Facebook.

Bangladesh is a very impoverished area and many of the poor go door-to-door asking for food. The area is affected by landslides and the government has done very little to try to protect the area. The students in India are very creative and we will be helping them to market themselves as well as to teach them English. We are accepting donations at the Prospering Christians website, as well.

Paper Bag Designs

For over forty-five years, the museum of Modern Art has been adding paper bag designs to their Shopping Bag Museum. There you will find designs from most of the major retailers.

Companies are now trying to push reusable bags to help keep costs down. The paper bag has had a rather short – lived history after its development in 1915. Companies introduced plastic bags in 1965 and because of the problems with pollution, companies are introducing reusable bags.

Retail companies can order paper bag designs for their products and many paper bag distributors look for new designs yearly. Here are some of the designs from the past currently on display at the Shopping Bag Museum:

Inspiration from Another’s Work

In order to become great at designing, many artists like to join groups which include other artists. With the advent of the Internet, it is possible to view other’s work online as well as in museums or at special events. I recently viewed this beautiful creation on another site entitled, “Best Cupcake Designs.”

It does not matter in which medium the artist works, it the design is imaginative and unique, I draw inspiration from it. The colors and the design of the work attracted me.

T-shirts and tank tops

Here are my latest t-shirt and tank top designs. I am currently marketing the Africanus line for the MLK Day and Black History Month. My mother’s garden was the source of inspiration. The African Masai Warrior is from Kenya. All of the designs are in watercolor. I have a passion for painting – I get totally absorbed!

These shirts are all 100% cotton and machine washable. Great for biking, hiking, or just hanging around the house. Wouldn’t it be nice to have your own unique t-shirt design?

This tiger lily design is one of the first flowers I started painting over 20 years ago. I saw a huge tiger lily bush while I was out walking and fell in love with tiger lilies. The colors and shapes of the petals make an interesting study. Notice how the two stems mirror one another.

I did this fruit design recently when I saw an interesting arrangement at the grocery store. I liked the colors on a plain white background.

This men’s t-shirt makes a proud statement for men who are interested in their roots.
The contrasting colors really make the design stand out. This shirt comes in other colors as well.
Yes, and the ladies like this design as well. It’s quite a conversation piece for collectors of African artifacts. It is amazing that there are still Masai tribe warriors in Kenya on the continent of Africa in this day and age. But the culture is very interesting.

Creativity in Children

I had the pleasure of substituting for a third grade teacher today. It was a small class and the children were well – behaved. The teacher left work for the students to do with a note explaining when to assign the work. One of the last assignments for the day was a writing assignment where the teacher began a Christmas story with three sentences and the children had to complete it.

Before the writing assignment, I had begun the day with a book which I read aloud. The class, composed mainly of girls, was amazingly cooperative with me and worked together well. As I announced that I was going to read a book aloud, the girls, almost cat-like, huddled together and leaned against each other to get more comfortable. As I looked, they had legs swung over their neighbor’s and had lain down on the rug, side by side.

They listened intently to the book, made comments, and asked questions about this poignant story of a Spanish girl whose mother left her with her grandparents to come to work in the United States. The mother returned when she heard the daughter had memorized a poem about Little Red Riding Hood and was about to recite it before an audience at the school.

It is amazing how children seem to have no problem making up a story. When it was time to write the Christmas story, it was clear in their minds and seemed to flow smoothly. Some took longer than others as they gave much thought to the plot. The two boys and one girl had trouble creating a plot and had to be prompted. They all wrote the stories and the result was that no two stories were alike. They read the stories from a wicker stool in front of the class. I was very impressed with the results.
